North Cascades Highway reopens for the summer

It is the earliest reopening of state Route 20 between milepost 134 and 171 since 2019.

DIABLO, Wash. — North Cascades Highway reopened Friday, April 19, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The section of state Route 20 between milepost 134 at Ross Dam Trailhead on the west side of the Cascades, and milepost 171 at Silver Star Gate on the east side, closed Nov. 30 for the winter.

Friday's reopening marks the earliest since 2019, when the highway reopened April 18.

The Department of Transportation warns drivers who plan to travel along the highway to be prepared for potential snow and ice.

State Route 20 is the northernmost route across the Cascade Mountain Range in Washington. It's also part of the Cascade Loop, which is a 400-mile driving tour through the Cascades, according to WSDOT.

The earliest SR 20 ever reopened was in 2005, on March 10. The latest it reopened was June 14, 1974.
