Revive I-5 work in south Seattle expands this weekend. Here's what to expect

This weekend will be the first of 13 weekend-long lane reductions and ramp closures.

SEATTLE — According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, weeknight Revive I-5 work in south Seattle will expand to weekend-long lane reductions and ramp closures this week.

This weekend will be the first of 13 weekend-long lane reductions and ramp closures. The work begins at 11 p.m. Friday and will last through 4 a.m. Monday. The work was originally expected to begin on Jan. 12 but was delayed due to snowy, icy weather.

Here's what to expect:

  • Southbound I-5 reduced to two lanes between Boeing Access Road and SR 900/Martin Luther King Jr. Way
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Way ramp will be closed

The work also includes weeknight lane reductions on northbound I-5 near the interchange with I-405 in Tukwila. The lane reductions are every night through 4 a.m. Friday. The northbound lane reductions will begin near Southcenter Parkway and extend to SR 900/Martin Luther King Jr. Way South. The Southcenter Parkway and Interurban Avenue ramps will be closed during the work.

The $29.3 million project includes replacing damaged concrete, grinding to eliminate ruts, road grooves created by travel, and restriping a five-mile section. WSDOT said this project is part of the first major work on this section of I-5 in about 60 years.

WSDOT advises the work is weather-dependent and could be postponed due to cold temperatures, snow, or heavy rain.

"In the past, we would put work like this on hold during the winter months but more and more our construction season has expanded to a year-round timeline to meet our needs for critical preservation work," Project Engineer James Harper said.

WSDOT said drivers should expect extra travel time and that they should plan ahead and take alternate routes such as I-405 or SR 99.

The Revive I-5 project consists of over 20 restoration projects for the I-5 corridor in King County. The whole project is expected to be finished in the 2030s.
