SR 99 northbound tunnel closure and other weekend traffic impacts

A portion of the SR 99 tunnel will be closed overnight Friday into Saturday for regular maintenance.

Drivers who take State Route 99 northbound to get through Seattle should be aware of some closures happening Friday night into the weekend.

The northbound lanes through the tunnel will close from 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 to 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 for regular maintenance, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

In addition, the South Royal Brougham Way on-ramp to northbound SR 99 will close from 10 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday for ramp meter installation.

The regular maintenance on the tunnel is a routine procedure for the tunnel, WSDOT said. The maintenance involves making sure the tunnel systems are running smoothly and to keep up with warranties.

Other notable closures include State Route 20, or North Cascades Highway.

WSDOT closed SR 20 east of Newhalem on Jan. 23 due to high avalanche risk. The highway is closed at milepost 121 and will likely remain closed through the weekend until the risk subsides.

Skagit and Whatcom County drivers can get real-time updates by following WSDOT North on Twitter.

Some good news is Mount Baker Highway has reopened. It was previously closed also because of avalanche risks.

Tacoma Avenue at 1st Street is expected to be closed for about two more weeks due to the Hilltop Tacoma Link extension project.
