OLYMPIA, Wash. — A new outdoor patio at Westside Tavern in Olympia suffered heavy damage after a Tesla careened into the space following a collision with another vehicle.
The incident occurred on Monday around 1:35 p.m. near Harrison Avenue W and Milroy Street.
A man was driving the Tesla eastbound on Harrison when he collided with another vehicle traveling the same direction, according to Olympia police. The driver lost control of his vehicle, hit a telephone pole then drove into an outdoor seating area of a nearby tavern.
Westside Tavern said the Tesla narrowly missed striking one patron on the patio. No one was injured in the incident.
The tavern will remain open. The loss of the patio is a hit for the business during the busy summer season, according to a Facebook post from Westside Tavern.
The driver was cited for reckless driving and driving too fast for the conditions. Based on evidence and reports gathered by an officer from witnesses and drivers at the scene, Olympia police said they don't think the Tesla was in self-driving mode.
