Drivers in Snohomish County should prepare for a possible traffic headache this weekend.
The Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close all westbound lanes of U.S. 2 between State Route 9 and the I-5 interchange so crews can repave the west end of the Hewitt Avenue trestle. The roadway will close at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 17 and reopen by 4 a.m. on Monday, August 20.
This is the fourth of six planned weekend closures of westbound U.S. 2.
Traffic will be diverted onto SR 9 where drivers can decide whether they want to drive northbound via Marysville to SR 528 or southbound via Mill Creek to SR 96. WSDOT says drivers should prepare for along delays through the detours.
During the closures, crews repave three miles of the westbound lanes from Bickford Avenue to the I-5 interchange, including the Hewitt Avenue trestle.
Pavement on the trestle is 16 years old, past its estimated lifespan of 12 to 15 years, according to the Washington state Department of Transportation.
The closures are weather dependent, and previous weekend work on the Highway 2 trestle has already been canceled multiple times due to rain.
The other closures are scheduled for the same time frame on the following weekends:
- Sept. 7-10
- Sept. 14-17
