Landslide closes lanes of westbound SR 18 in Auburn

A landslide closed all westbound lanes of SR 18 in Auburn early Wednesday morning. Crews reopened one lane just before 11 a.m.

AUBURN, Wash. — Multiple lanes of State Route 18 just west of State Route 167 in Auburn are closed due to a landslide.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) initially closed all westbound lanes but reopened the left lane just before 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Crews reopened the on-ramps from SR 167 and West Valley Highway to westbound SR 18 by 12:10 p.m.

The WSDOT first reported the landslide just after midnight Wednesday.

“This will be an extended closure and travelers need to plan to use alternate routes,” the WSDOT tweeted.

Drivers are advised to give themselves extra time during the morning commute.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson said the WSDOT geotechnical engineers were assessing the stability of the landslide around 9:10 a.m.

“Their assessment of the soil is an important part of reopening the road,” the WSDOT said. “We'll share info as available, and we appreciate your patience as crews work on this clean up!”
