Blake Island: a campground that's close to Seattle, yet worlds away

Blake Island — 476-acre Blake Island has always been a perfect place to camp -- it was an ancestral campground for the Suquamish tribe.

The island became a Marine State Park in 1959. There are multiple on-shore waterfront campsites, as well as mooring buoys and a dock.  Freedom Boat Club of Seattle took Evening's crew to the island for a day. For a one-time joining fee and monthly payment, the club is way to access an entire fleet of boats, from fishing boats to runabouts to ones you can overnight on. And it’s also great way to access this boat-in only state park.

Most of the park's 100,000 visitors a year come to experience Tillicum Village, a tourist attraction on the other side of the island. But few take the time to discover Blake Island’s other experiences: 12 miles of trails, sandy beaches and a view of the Seattle skyline that makes this one of the most unique campgrounds in the state. A place where you can gaze at the lights of the city, yet feel worlds away.

How do you get there? By boat! It's about 4 miles from Alki if you want to paddle a Kayak, or take the Argosy's Tillicum Ferry to Blake Island, it runs from Seattle's Pier 54.
