LYNNWOOD, Wash. — In the Edmonds School District, one school must pack up and move to a new location after the freezing temperatures over the weekend left behind a lot of damage.
On Thursday, the district also dealt with icy conditions that led to early morning messages sent out to families.
"I wasn't surprised for the delay. Then we got another text about 30 minutes later saying it was actually cancelled,” said Edmonds Elementary parent Cedar Christiansen.
Classes were cancelled districtwide.
A cold snap over the weekend led to a mess at Meadowdale Elementary in Lynnwood.
"We have our fire sprinkler system in all of our buildings. It was cold enough that one of those pipes in the second-floor classroom burst, and it ended up flooding 14 classrooms,” said Assistant Superintendent Greg Schwab. “Classrooms on the second floor and classrooms on the first floor were all damaged."
Part of dealing with the damage means packing up Meadowdale Elementary and moving to Woodway Elementary, a vacant school about 8 miles away.
Meadowdale Elementary students will have remote learning next week, and they will start classes at Woodway Elementary on January 30.
It is a temporary fix while the district deals with the fallout from the freezing temperatures.
“I've been in the district for 20 years. And we've not done anything like this,” said Schwab. “Everybody's just kind of rolled up their sleeves and said let's do it and let's get to work.”
