Freeze warning leads some Western Washington cold weather shelters to open early

Most warming centers open when overnight temperatures are 34 degrees or lower.

MARYSVILLE, Wash. — Dangerously cold overnight temperatures are prompting some Western Washington wanting centers to open sooner than planned.

A warming center located at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Marysville is scheduled to open for the evening of Friday, Oct. 27. Other locations in Snohomish County are also opening for the forecasted cold night.

Most of western Washington will be under a freeze warning throughout Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

The Bethlehem Lutheran Church shelter location operated by LINC NW planned to start its sheltering season on Nov. 1 for cold weather nights but due to the forecasted temperatures for the evening of Oct. 27 and overnight - it will open early.

LINC NW said its shelter program for cold weather nights would not be possible without volunteers. More volunteers are needed. LINC NW manages any donations that come in through its Family Resource Center.

An in-person training is scheduled for noon on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the church on 1st Avenue North, at the corner of 51st and Grove. People who are interested can email nathan@lincnw.org for more information. 

The Snohomish County Public Safety HUB will be updating its running list of cold weather utility resources, daytime warming centers and overnight shelters. To view that list, click here

If youth between the ages of 12 and 17 are in need of shelter, the number to call is 425-877-5171.

The cold weather season for Western Washington will last through March.
