Flooding lingers in some areas following heavy rain in King County

Thursday's rainfall left streets, and schools, flooded for much of Friday.

KENT, Wash. — King County residents woke up to flooded roads and slow traffic after a bout of heavy rain in Puget Sound.

“It was pretty intense. I didn’t really expect it, it kind of came out of nowhere,” said Matthew Hunt, who lives in Bellevue.

The National Weather Service says some areas in western Washington received as much as three inches of rain, a deluge that led to pools of standing water on quite a few of Kent’s roads.

On Friday, Kent city workers tried to clean up as best they could, sending pumps to help clear outstanding water along major roads.

However, flooding was still too much in some areas.

Mill Creek Middle School had to cancel in-person classes today due to the rear parking lot and field being flooded. While some Washingtonians weren’t too fazed, others were surprised to see so much rain all come at once.

“I don’t mind the rain. It’s Washington!” said Kent resident Taylor McCain.

“I’ve seen that happen before in Washington, but that was pretty crazy,” Hunt recalled. “I feel like this happens every winter, but it just kind of depends. Washington’s weather is all over the place.”

Thursday's soaker brought record daily rainfall to the region. But the heavy rain dried up Friday. High pressure brings clear skies this Halloween weekend, but temperatures will dip into the 30s and 40s.
