SEATTLE — Western Washington was pummeled by a rare summer storm over the weekend. Lightning shattered trees and heavy rain flooded streets across Puget Sound.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue Monday. KING 5 Meteorologist Rich Marriott says they will be nothing like the storm that hit western Washington on Saturday night.
Temperatures through Tuesday will only reach into upper 60s, and Tuesday will bring scattered rain showers, along with a few sunbreaks.
More than 2,000 lightning strikes over the weekend
The National Weather Service Seattle reported 2,200 lightning strikes from 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday.
"That works out to an estimated 440 an hour and 7 to 8 a minute," NWS Seattle tweeted.
The storm caused dozens of flights to be diverted from Sea-Tac Airport to other airports in the Pacific Northwest.
Lightning struck a giant spruce tree along Seattle's Green Lake walking trail. The tree was split down the middle and large sections of the tree came crashing down.
Thunderstorms caused a severe weather delay at Husky Stadium. Fans left the stands due to the safety risk. Washington and California returned to the field at 10:30 p.m. California went on to beat the Huskies 20-19 well past midnight.
The Washington State Fair advised guests to shelter in place as the storm moved through. The concert and rodeo were canceled, and the fair closed early due to severe weather conditions.
The Death Cab for Cutie concert at Marymoor Park in Redmond was canceled due to the storm, and the Chris Isaak show at Chateau Ste. Michelle was cut short by rain and lightning.
Thousands lost power over the weekend, but most power was restored by Sunday morning.
Sunday started much calmer than Saturday, with a partly sunny morning, but rain and hail moved in around 3 p.m. and soaked fans at the Seahawks game. The sun broke through shortly after the band of moisture pushed past Seattle and up the convergence zone.
