This was the third-warmest July on record in Seattle, NWS says

The average high temperature for the month was 81.5 at SEA Airport. The normal average high is 77.4.

SEATTLE — July 2024 will go down on record as the third-warmest July in Seattle, only surpassed by 2015 and 2018, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

With only one day left to go, the average temperature for the month of July in Seattle was 69.8 degrees. It's the 12th July in a row with above-normal temperatures, according to the NWS. The last year with below-normal temperatures in July was 2012, which recorded an average temperature of 64.3 degrees.

The average high temperature at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was 81.5 degrees, while the typical average is 77.4, according to the NWS.

The summer overall was predicted to be hotter and drier than normal. The Office of the State Climatologist estimates that there are higher chances for above normal temperatures for a majority of the state in August and below-normal precipitation.

July began with above-normal temperatures and experienced a lull in the middle of the month.

Highs are expected to return to the 80s in the coming days and stay that way into early next week, according to the NWS. Widespread moderate heat risk levels are expected both Thursday and Friday along with warm overnight temperatures, which means there's little opportunity for cooling in people's homes.

Moderate heat risk means the temperatures pose a danger to most individuals who are sensitive to heat, especially those without effective cooling or adequate hydration. The NWS recommends people check up on elderly neighbors and keep a close eye on young children, who are more susceptible to heat-related illness.
