Saturday storms spark wildfire, force event cancellations in western Washington

According to KING 5 Meteorologist Ashley Ruiz, there will be a chance of isolated storms, but nothing as strong as Saturday's event.

WASHINGTON, USA — Thunderstorms brought heavy rain, hail and lightning to the lowlands and mountains Saturday night.

The storm traveled from south to north overnight and, with that, had substantially weakened.

Saturday storm impacts

Overnight lightning strikes sparked a brushfire that is burning near Leavenworth. According to Lake Wenatchee Fire & Rescue, the fire started on Bee Sting Hill and prompted Level 1 evacuations for the surrounding area.

According to LWFR, the storm's accompanying rain helped to slow the fire's activity and spread. They, along with DNR crews, will stay on the scene throughout Sunday.

The fire is burning about 20 minutes north of Leavenworth.

The storm also forced a concert cancellation at the White River Amphitheater in Auburn. According to a post on the venue's social media, the show featuring Slightly Stoopid, Dirty Heads, and Elovators was postponedSome fans were already inside the venue when the storm started and had to evacuate.

Sunday storm chances

The upper-level low that brought strong to severe thunderstorms to the Pacific Northwest on Saturday will continue to spin near the coast of Oregon and Washington on Sunday.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will begin to develop over southwest Washington this morning and quickly move from south to north over the Olympic peninsula. While the best chance for scattered storms will be over the Olympic Peninsula and Southwest Interior today, a few storms may develop near the I-5 corridor this afternoon. Storms will not be as strong as they were on Saturday, and they will be spotty to scattered in nature.

Storm radar projections for Sunday afternoon

While severe thunderstorms are not expected, a few storms could turn strong and produce gusty winds, small hail, moderate to heavy rain, and lightning. Unlike Saturday, widespread rain is not expected, so there is a better chance that lightning could spark new wildfires.
