Western Washington to climb above freezing Monday

The difference between Sunday and Monday will be a couple of degrees, but we will finally climb above freezing on Monday.

SEATTLE — The entire western Washington region saw very cold, sometimes extreme temperatures as a storm system moved through the state through the weekend.

Many locations saw numbers below or well below freezing early Friday morning, which continued through Sunday.

Bellingham's high of 10 degrees Friday was the coldest daily high temperature in 59 years since Dec. 16, 1964.

According to NWS Seattle, Sunday morning's low of 14 degrees was the coldest temperature in Seattle since Nov. 14, 2010. The coldest temperature Seattle has seen since record-keeping began was back on Jan. 31, 1950, when the temperature was a frosty 0 degrees.

Mostly sunny skies are forecasted for Monday, but the cold will stick around. The difference between Sunday and Monday will be a couple of degrees, but we will finally climb above freezing on Monday. Until Monday afternoon, temperatures will struggle to reach the freezing mark. It's almost been 72 hours below freezing. The thermometer will likely stay at or below 32 degrees for the majority of the area until midday, or so, on Monday.

A Pacific storm will arrive in western Washington late Tuesday. The timing of the system will determine what precipitation type we will get. It will take time for warmer air to take over, which raises some concern for a rain/snow/freezing rain mix. Precipitation will likely first arrive as rain and snow showers, but there may be a window Tuesday night and Wednesday morning when freezing rain mixes in, as well. There is still plenty of time to watch for this potential. All in all, it does not look nearly as severe as the ice storm in 2022.

As we go throughout the day on Wednesday, precipitation will transition to all rain.
