ABERDEEN, Wash. — Grays Harbor County is dealing with three significant mudslides that closed some roads until further notice.
A portion of Basich Boulevard in Aberdeen was already closed in December when the city noticed it was unstable. However, heavy rainfall and a mudslide on Monday and Tuesday destroyed the sidewalk and the asphalt, forcing the road to remain closed until at least the spring.
Basich Boulevard is used as a backroad and a shortcut to Grays Harbor Hospital.
The two other mudslides were caused by rain. Two of them closed sections of State Route 109; one near Taholah and one near Hoquiam.
As of Wednesday, the SR 109 in Taholah at milepost 34 is back open.
SR 109 at milepost 2 near Hoquiam city limits has been closed for several days, according to WSDOT.
“It’s something that’s a pretty big challenge for our crews,” said WSDOT spokesperson Doug Adamson.
Both mudslides are still moving, according to Washington State Emergency Management.
Adamson said the closure near Hoqiuam could last several days, but noted there is a detour around the route, which still allows traffic from Hoquiam to coastal communities.
No property damage was reported from either slide.
The mudslides come after the area was pounded with heavy rain. Bowerman Airport in Hoquiam reported 2.57 inches of rain Monday, which beat the record for most rain on Jan. 6.
Rain is expected to turn to showers Tuesday night. Another system is expected to move through Thursday for more showers.
