El Grito serves authentic Mexican cuisine in Seattle's South Lake Union

Everything on the menu is made in house from scratch. #k5evening

SEATTLE — In Mexican culture El Grito translates to a celebratory scream. While you might get a few stares if you start yelling, there is a lot to celebrate at Seattle's El Grito Taqueria

The cozy cantina is located in the heart of the South Lake Union. The neighborhood has undergone a lot of changes in recent years with with new high-rise apartments and construction cranes dotting the skyline. But the building that houses El Grito has survived the development and dates back to 1943.

"As we looked at locations, the bones of this building is what excited us," said co-owner Dan Olsby. "You can't see beams like this anywhere else, so we took that and ran with it."

The building has always housed restaurants and bars. El Grito is the latest iteration offering authentic Mexican cuisine and cocktails.

The most popular dish - and the head chef's personal recommendation - is the Quesabirria. It's two braised beef short rib tacos topped with cheese and served with savory consommé for dipping. If that's not mouthwatering enough, you'll also find burritos, enchiladas, Carne Asada and more on the menu.
