SEATTLE — In a city that seems to be racing towards the future at break-speed, above King Street Station, there's a place to take off shoes, rest the body and let the mind explore possibilities. Mia Imani and Mayola Tikaka are the co-creators of Dream Temple (For Octavia).
"Most of our world is balanced on wakefulness, I'll sleep when I'm dead, and productivity," Imani said. "But what does it look like if we pay attention to this more sacred or more quiet space in our lives?"
Rested, the mind open, visitors are ready to connect to the images and words of acclaimed Science Fiction author Octavia Butler who spent her final years in Lake Forest Park.
"I think that Octavia provided so many insights and visions for what the world could become," Imani said.
Butler's prophetic novel "Parable of the Sower" begins in 2024, with climate change and wealth inequality destabilizing communities all across the country.
But this dystopian vision does not have to come true.
"So, this is really an opportunity to invite basically everyone to dream and sit and rest and say 'OK what's not working?'," Imani said. "Let's honor that but let's also envision what we want to see, what would a healed city look like, what would a healed community look like? And that requires stillness and contemplation."
It will take rested minds working at full capacity to dream up solutions to problems racing our way.
Dream Temple (For Octavia) runs through May 23 at King Street Station.
