SEATTLE — The man accused of killing his 8-month-old son in Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood was charged Monday.
Dion Lamont Montgomery, 35, is accused of shooting the infant in the head and then firing shots at strangers at random while he fled the scene on May 8.
Montgomery is charged with first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.
Montgomery is being held in the King County Jail on $5 million bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday, May 23.
According to court documents, two people reported they were shot at by the suspect. They were not hit but hid behind parked vehicles for protection. It was later discovered those two cars were stuck by bullets. Montgomery was found by police at a gas station a few blocks away. He then told police he had used PCP, a hallucinogenic, earlier in the day and "blamed his actions on demons."
While he was being taken into custody, another 911 caller reported a woman was shouting that someone killed her baby. When officers arrived at the scene, less than a block away from the gas station, they discovered the body of the 9-month-old victim.
Autopsy results from the King County Medical Examiner's Office revealed the baby was shot at close range, within 12 inches. Medical examiners said the baby was 8 months old.
In an interview with KING 5 on Friday, the victim's aunt remembered the child as a "sweet, angelic little man."
"He had nothing but a bright future ahead of him. His smile was contagious," his aunt said. "Anytime when he was around anyone, he immediately lit up the room. It's extremely excruciating. [We'll] always remember his smile."
