Prosecutors: Suspect who pulled gun in theater previously threatened to kill coworkers

Prosecutors said the man had a history of making threats of gun violence.

SEATTLE — A man accused of pulling a gun inside a Seattle movie theater and threatening to kill patrons last week has been charged.

Devon Kadari Mayfield, 30, was charged Wednesday with second- and fourth-degree assault, felony harassment and unlawful display of a weapon.

On Sept. 13, a fight broke out at the Regal Thornton Place movie theater in Northgate when Mayfield wouldn’t let another moviegoer return to his seat. Mayfield pushed the man’s girlfriend when she asked Mayfield why he wouldn’t let her boyfriend pass, according to charging documents.

Mayfield allegedly punched the man and woman multiple times before pulling out a handgun. Witnesses told police Mayfield said, “I have a gun and I’m going to shoot you,” and “I’m gonna shoot everyone.”

Moviegoers fled the theater and employees locked themselves in an office.

The victims had facial injuries, and about half of the man’s left ear was “ripped off” prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Mayfield has a history of threatening gun violence. Between Nov. 30, 2021 and Jan. 3, 2023, Mayfield was prevented from owning firearms under an extreme risk protection order, which was issued after Mayfield threatened to bring a gun to work and kill his work crew in a “massacre killing,” according to charging documents.

“This obviously elevates the State’s concern for community safety,” Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Ian Michels-Slettvet wrote in charging documents.

Mayfield is expected to enter a plea at his arraignment hearing Oct. 2.
