Suspect in Normandy Park sexual assault charged

Dedrick D. Mitchell, 36, faces charges of first-degree kidnapping and first-degree rape for the alleged crime in October of 2023.

NORMANDY PARK, Wash. — The man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman at gunpoint near Normandy Park in October of 2023 was charged Feb. 5.

Dedrick D. Mitchell, 36, faces charges of first-degree kidnapping and first-degree rape. He's held in King County Jail on $925,000 bail for the assault in Normandy Park and other, unrelated charges.

His arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 15.

Around 5 p.m. on Oct. 23, police received a report of a missing adult. The person making the report said his girlfriend went out to walk their dog but had not returned home for more than an hour. He said his girlfriend usually is gone for about 10 minutes, according to a statement of probable cause.

Less than an hour later, King County deputies requested the assistance of Normandy Park police.

Law enforcement found the victim at a home near the 2100 block of SW 170th Street.

The woman told police she was near the corner of 16th Avenue SW and SW 170th Street when she saw a blue sedan stopped on the side of the road with its engine running. The driver, who was wearing a "COVID style facemask," rolled down a window and asked her for directions.

As the woman was trying to help, the driver, later identified as Mitchell, opened the door, pointed a gun at her and told her to come closer or he would shoot, according to a statement of probable cause. He then made her get into the vehicle.

The woman was driven a short distance away, where she was sexually assaulted.

The woman then "pretended to have a panic attack" as she tried to figure out a way to escape. When Mitchell tried to move on top of her, the woman grabbed his hand, which was still holding a gun, opened the passenger door, and began screaming.

Mitchell told the woman to get out of the vehicle and she ran and hid until he left.

The woman eventually found a house with lights on and got help from the residents.

Both the woman and suspect vehicle were captured on home security cameras at various times.

Using a sexual assault kit, police were able to connect Mitchell to the assault in Normandy Park.

Mitchell was being held in King County Jail for two other cases when he was connected to the assault. He also faces charges of first- and second-degree robbery and first-degree assault.
