TACOMA, Wash. — One person is in custody for suspicion of DUI after two crashes on northbound Interstate 705 early Sunday morning, the Washington State Patrol said.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the suspect was driving the wrong way going southbound on northbound I-705 when they struck another vehicle head-on. The Washington State Patrol first posted about the collision at 4:47 a.m. Sunday.
The Washington State Patrol said the two victims, the driver and passenger, exited the vehicle following the crash to call 911. One of them, a woman, was struck by a third vehicle that was traveling through the scene of the first crash. The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to be ok.
The wrong-way driver was arrested for suspicion of DUI with the potential of more charges, according to the Washington State Patrol. The driver of the third vehicle is not facing any charges.
Trooper John Dattilo said Washington State Patrol resources were exhausted Sunday morning after three major DUI crashes in three hours and had to call on other agencies for support.
"Drive sober. Please find an alternative way to get home. Do not get behind the wheel," Dattilo told KING 5.
