TACOMA, Wash. — One person is in custody after they caused a head-on crash when they drove onto Interstate 5 the wrong way in Tacoma overnight, the Washington State Patrol said.
The Washington State Patrol said a trooper saw a vehicle driving the wrong way going eastbound on westbound State Route 16 at around 2:21 a.m. Sunday.
The trooper attempted to stop the vehicle but it continued onto I-5 driving southbound on the northbound lanes. Washington State Patrol said the vehicle struck another car head-on just north of the 56th St. overpass.
The victims, a driver and a passenger, were transported to the hospital. The Washington State Patrol said the passenger was seriously injured but is expected to be ok.
The driver was arrested and the Washington State Patrol said it will recommend a DUI vehicular assault charge.
Northbound I-5 was closed for several hours while authorities investigated the crash.
Trooper John Dattilo said Washington State Patrol resources were exhausted Sunday morning after three major DUI crashes in three hours and had to call on other agencies for support.
"Drive sober. Please find an alternative way to get home. Do not get behind the wheel," Dattilo told KING 5.
