AUBURN, Wash. — An Auburn family says miracles do happen.
A grandfather was shot twice outside of his church Wednesday night and is now recovering at Harborview Medical Center.
Baby Maya has no idea she almost lost her grandfather.
"It was probably the scariest phone call I've ever had," said Lisa Wilkinson.
Lisa Wilkinson said that Wednesday night, her husband Clynn was volunteering at their church. As he locked up and headed for his car, police say two men dressed in black attacked him, demanding his keys.
"They started beating him with their guns, kicking him while he was down," Lisa Wilkinson said.
She says everything happened so fast that he barely had time to react. And then gunshots rang out. Clynn was hit twice. The men took off on foot. Clynn was able to make it to the nearby 7-Eleven, where someone called 911. He was rushed to Harborview. Somehow, the bullets didn't hit anything vital.
"As a gunshot goes, I guess, missed everything internal that could have been really, really bad. So that's a blessing."
And they are counting those blessings. Clynn has a lot to live for. Wife Lisa and daughter Amelia say this may have slowed him down, but he'll be back on his feet in no time. He'll have to be if he wants to keep up with Maya.
Lisa Wilkinson told KING 5 she feels that crime has gotten out of control because she says there's no accountability. She hopes their story will help spur change that leads to more arrests and less violent crime.
