PARIS, France — In her second Olympic games, Jordan Chiles brought home two more medals and will get a nice paycheck on top of it.
Chiles, who grew up in Vancouver, was part of the Team USA squad that won the gold medal in the team competition at the Paris Olympics with fellow American stars Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee. Chiles then capped off her time in Paris with a bronze medal in the floor exercise competition.
The two medals in Paris for Chiles give her three overall, as she was part of Team USA's silver medal win in the team gymnastics competition at the Tokyo Olympics.
The U.S. does not pay athletes directly for competing at the Olympics, but it is one of the nations that gives bonuses to those who bring home Olympic medals.
In Tokyo, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee gave out $37,500 for each gold medal, $22,500 for each silver medal and $15,000 for each bronze medal earned at the Games. Those numbers vary from country to country, and not every country awards bonuses to medal winners.
From those figures, Chiles would earn $52,500 for her performance in Paris. That is likely far from what Chiles earns in endorsements and other sources of income, but represents a nice five-figure bonus. That money also is not taxed after former President Barack Obama signed a law ending the "victory tax" in 2016.
Chiles is one of 13 athletes with western Washington ties to have made it onto the medal stand at the Paris Olympics. See the full list here.
