BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Two people were injured when a falling tree struck their car on Saturday morning along Interstate 5 just south of Bellingham.
The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-5 near milepost 245, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding.
Photos of the car show the falling tree smash through the Jeep's windshield. Both people inside the car were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, Harding said.
A weather system has brought strong winds to western Washington this weekend, leaving thousands of people without power.
The strongest winds are expected to be north of Everett, where wind gusts could reach up to 40 miles per hour, according to the KING 5 Weather Team. The strong winds are also expected along the coast, in the San Juan Islands, Whidbey Island and western Skagit and Whatcom counties.
A Gale Warning is now in effect through 5 p.m. on Saturday. A Wind Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday for the Everett area and San Juan Islands, with warnings of sustained winds up to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph.
Drivers are urged to stay vigilant, watch for debris on or near roads, and to report any fallen power lines.
