OLYMPIA, Wash. — Crews are restoring power to thousands after snow fell in western Washington overnight into Thursday morning.
Puget Sound Energy is reporting fewer than 2,000 customers without power after more than 30,000 customers were left in the dark on Thursday.
Outages were mostly clustered around Olympia and elsewhere across Thurston County, and on parts of the Kitsap peninsula around Bremerton, Poulsbo, and Gig Harbor.
Drivers woke up to snow around the Olympia area Thursday morning. KING 5 video showed snow lingering on major roadways and arterial streets in the city and at the state capitol, however, conditions were relatively normal on Interstate 5 despite some slush remaining in the left-most lane. There were about one to three inches of wet, slushy snow on the ground near east Port Orchard around 5:30 a.m. Those accumulations quickly melted.
South Kitsap Fire and Rescue reported a live power line fire between Fagerud and Shady Glen at around 5:45 a.m. Downed power lines were also reported on State Route 3 across both lanes at around 6:40 a.m. Trees fell on State Route 307 near milepost four north of Poulsbo.
One crash was reported on State Route 8 and another was reported on Highway 101 in Olympia. Washington State Patrol Trooper John Dattilo said officers were busy Wednesday night into Thursday morning helping drivers who were caught out in the snow on I-5 and Highway 101.
Several school districts in Thurston County and on the peninsula called for delays due to road conditions.
