Renton stabbing suspect back in jail, judge sets bail at $500,000

K'Shawn K. Jimerson was booked into the Maleng Regional Justice Center for second-degree murder.

RENTON, Wash. — The 19-year-old man charged with murder after allegedly stabbing another man to death inside a Renton apartment is back in jail.

K'Shawn K. Jimerson was booked into the Maleng Regional Justice Center for second-degree murder after previously posting bond and being released from custody the day after he was arrested. Bail was set at $500,000 after prosecutors requested bail be set at $2 million.

On Thursday, Oct. 3, Superior Court Judge Johanna Bender said there was a "substantial amount of information" that wasn't available when bail was initially set for Jimerson. That includes prosecutors arguing that new evidence from the autopsy revealed stab wounds that would refute a self-defense claim.

On Friday, Sept. 27, Jimerson allegedly stabbed a 65-year-old man.

Police said that Jimerson called 911 to report the stabbing, and he was standing outside his apartment when officers arrived at the scene. The victim was found unconscious on a couch inside the residence with a shirt that was soaked in blood.

A witness who lives in an adjacent apartment said the victim was hired to do work at the apartment by Jimerson's aunt, whom he was living with. The witness said he heard an argument and scuffle before seeing Jimerson standing outside the apartment with a bloody knife.

Officers found blood throughout the unit and a bloody knife that had been submerged in water in the sink, according to court documents.

A Ring Camera showed Jimerson striking the victim in the back of the head with a stick when he was walking out of the apartment's front entrance. The victim chased Jimerson inside, and was stabbed by Jimerson just seconds later, according to court documents.

Jimerson's defense attorney argued the video is out of context and does not capture an argument before the confrontation.

"This stranger chased a 19-year-old into the 19-year-old's own house, and then something happened," the attorney said.

State prosecutors argued that "a knife was grabbed and these two wounds occurred" within 15 seconds after Jimerson is seen on video hitting the victim with what they referred to as "a bat."

According to prosecutors, citing the autopsy, the victim was stabbed in the ribs and back.

Prosecutors say they asked for $2 million bail due to the violent nature of the crime. "Although the Defendant committed a gratuitously violent crime, inexplicably, bail was set at only $50,000 on the basis of a lack of criminal history and ties to the community," wrote King County Senior Deputy Prosecutor Logan Bryant in court documents.

Jimerson was released from custody the day after he was arrested after he posted bond.

Court records showed Jimerson back in custody on Oct. 3 with a higher bail amount.
